Two events:

For Westies:

Owsley Stanley Remembrance and CD Release Party

One year after Owsley "Bear" Stanley's passing, come to Mill Valley and hear the first of Bear's Sonic Journals Presents: Big Brother & the Holding Company Featuring Janis Joplin Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968 through a kick-ass single-source sound system the way it is intended to be heard! We'll be remembering Bear with live music, including Big Brother guitarist Sam Andrew and other special musical guests.... Signed pre-release CDs will be available, and cover artist Stanley Mouse will be signing special edition commemorative posters. This event is the first fundraiser for the brand new Owsley Stanley Foundation, dedicated to the digitization, preservation, and release of Bear's Sonic Journals, a trove of over a thousand live concert recordings from the heart of the psychedelic era. Donations are encouraged and much appreciated, as we are footing the costs of this shindig ourselves. Sponsored by Meyer Sound and the Owsley Stanley Foundation.

For Easties:

I guess that didn't work - not sure how to change the dimensions of the photo-anyways he is a cool kitty that has been with me since last May. The name seemed appropriate although his lab skills are not apparent!

Any info on this Sweetwater show? The venue overall?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By doobious (Happy420) on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 - 02:04 pm: Edit Post

The venue is fantastic. Great sound and atmosphere. The food was amazing...walked up to order and spied a bowl of fresh morrels, asked the chef what they were for, and he said "for people who ask, we have a special": sauteed morels in garlic cream sauce over crostini. I could have eaten a truckload. They were fresh picked hours before.

Scott Law & co put on a great show. Among all the other guests, Jerry Harrison from the Talking Heads sat in for a tune.

Listened to some of the Janis release and it sounded awesome. Can't wait to hear what else they release from Bear's vault. Stanley Mouse was on hand signing art.

My friend got me this from Starfinder:

From what Starfinder said last night, I guess it was put together pretty last minute. I only heard about it last Thursday. None-the-less the place as full, there was a line of people waiting to get in most of the night.

Rats. Now I wish I'd asked about the morels. I thought they were just a really expensive decoration!

I had a wonderful time last night. The CD is ***freaking outstanding*** Run, don't walk to buy this phenomenal recording.

Very relaxed atmosphere, a wonderful, genuine crowd, no pushing, no space invading/hogging, just lots and lots of smiles all around. Barlow was on the floor boogying down, and Jerry's daughter Trixie was just beaming every time I saw her. What a gracious and lovely woman. Everyone was so sweet! Happiness. This is how it should be.

Also: the pro staff were exceptionally professional and friendly, and the volunteer crew did a great job.

While the place was full, it was not packed or oversold. There was plenty of room to move around and it never got roasty gross downstairs, the merch room upstairs was a bit hot though.

It was nice, we were there fairly early, but didn't post up at a table, and the folks next to us offered to share their seats with us which worked out really well for everyone. They'd go to the floor for a few dances and we'd watch their stuff, then take 5 and they'd watch our drinks etc and so on. I was dancing by the chairs more than sitting, but I liked having a place to sit for the asking.

how late did the Mill Valley show run last night?

I considered bopping down there around 10:30 after my friend's band played in Fairfax, but when it started raining hard I drove home instead.

at home, I finished a joint from earlier in the evening and listened to Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother album!

Here's what I wrote about last night on FB:
"Just for the record: last night at the Sweetwater was lots of fun. I can't say it was musically stunning, it was just an evening of assorted nostalgiac jamming that I would have appreciated more if I truly remembered the musicians being tributed... all star jam sessions are usually emotionally rather that musically satisfying. But it was great to enjoy Mighty Dave Pellicciaro (thanks for the invite), as always, and a treat to hear so much of Scott Law, and the usual bass lessons by Master Pete Sears... I left a little early, so I don't know whether Bobby eventually played (saw him in the room). More to the point, I really love what Bobby has done with the building, and the sound is INCREDIBLE - and well mixed, too, sweet and full so it doesn't have to be earplitting. Oh, and the new Big Brother live recording souned most fine... great work all round, Bear! Hmn, the food wasn't bad either... See you there this Friday for Stu Allen and Mars Hotel!"

So, a few more words, Zoners...shout out thanks to Willows for conversation, hugs and table space. My warm spinach with chicken, bacon and avocado was very good too, and quite filling for $13.50. Not cheap, but quite good and quite fast...

Most of all, again, I loved what Bobby has done to the room. Those of you who remember it as the Masonic Lodge will appreciate the exposed beams on the roof (part of the better sound in the room), and may find the whole room far more tasteful and classy and smart, bar at the back of the room, chairs and small tables tucked along the sides of the rooms but out of the way of the dance floor. Good sound throughout, with repeater speakers near the back. Hidden cameras, remotely controlled, sent a video feed to screens behind the bar, and again in the cafe near the entrance, so you could walk around the place and never stop hearing the music. VERY smart and classy.

Plus, there's the whole upstairs, with a separate large room big enough for all sorts of things. Separate entrance from the outside. The building has been quite redone, with entries and entrances in unexpected places. And it worked last night, but I only counted one set of limited bathrooms, that's gonna be a problem I suspect... Oh, and the staff vibe, especially the waiters, was AMAZING! I'll go back there soon and often!

Hey Pete, glad I could help! Always good to see you, and I agree, the live jams were fun but nothing epic went down musically speaking. Everyone was dancing and having a great time, which is epic in it's own way :-)

I am so pleased with the Big Brother CD (which was playing upstairs in the Masons great room) it's almost absurd.

Bobby was an audience member last night, he didn't join the stage, but that was ok by me. Everyone deserves a night out with their friends now and then!

I was told that Bob was just an investor in the new Sweetwater, are you saying he helped design and decorate the room as well Peter? If so, cool, I saw the pics on the website, looks real nice. Did the mirrored men's room survive the remodel? That place was a trip...

williows, what is BBHC?

The best part of this video is the story of how heat transfer b/t the moon aand earth, causing extreme high and low tempatures takes place. this effect causes scorching of the moon and instant freezing on earth, at the ends of an electric current. Which will start the ice age. This is why he moved to the other side of the planet.

Bob is one of a group of investors that set up the place, and I think he's more the face of the place than he is/was seriously involved in the concept & design.

I think he owns the name as well.

Good for him & them, it sounds like it's working.
